Frequently Asked Questions

Here you will find answers to frequently asked questions that we encounter when working with candidates. With this list, we aim to draw your attention to questions that may arise once onboard the ship. We are always at your disposal to explain and provide additional information. Our goal is to ensure you feel well-prepared and confident as you embark on your maritime career with us.

General Questions on Employment and Requirements

When can I apply?

You can apply all year round! You can do so by filling out our Online Application Form, or you can apply in person at our office during business hours. We are always accepting applications and actively reviewing new candidates for upcoming assignments.

Do I need a passport?

Yes, a valid international passport is required for all our crew members. This is a mandatory requirement for international travel and processing maritime documents.

What other documents and certificates will I need?

Regardless of your citizenship and immigration status, you'll need valid maritime certificates. This includes essential STCW certificates (such as Basic Safety Training, Security Awareness, and ideally Crowd and Crisis Management for passenger ships), as well as a valid Seaman's Book (or Discharge Book) and a maritime medical certificate confirming your fitness for work on a vessel. The specific and full list of required certificates will always depend on the position you're applying for, so we'll provide a detailed breakdown for your role.

Do I need a work permit to work with your company in the EU?

If you are a citizen of Ukraine and have been granted Temporary Protection status in an EU Member State (for example, in Bulgaria), then, as a general rule, you do not need a separate work permit from that EU country. Your Temporary Protection status itself grants you the right to access the labor market in the country where you received it. However, it's essential to have your relevant documents (such as your Temporary Protection certificate or card) to prove this status. We will assist you in understanding and verifying the necessary documents to ensure a smooth hiring process.

Where can I obtain Temporary Protection status in the EU?

Temporary Protection status is granted in the EU country where you arrived after fleeing Ukraine. You need to contact the relevant state authorities of that country (e.g., police, migration services) for registration and processing of the necessary documents.

Please note that while the Temporary Protection status grants access to the labor market, you will still need to ensure your registration and residence documents are up-to-date in the EU Member State where you received this status. We can guide you on how to check your current registration status and what documents are required.

Is it possible to work with my partner on the same vessel?

Yes, it is possible, but it depends on the open positions available at that time. While we can't guarantee placement on the same vessel, we will certainly make every effort to accommodate couples who wish to work together, provided they both meet the qualifications for the open roles.

Can I go ashore at the ports the vessel visits?

Yes, you can, but only during your designated free time. Your ability to go ashore depends entirely on your position and your work schedule, which is managed to ensure operational efficiency. Crew members are responsible for returning to the vessel on time for their next shift. We encourage our crew to use their free time to explore the ports of call, offering a unique opportunity to see the world.

Travel and Onboard Life

Do I need a C1/D visa to work on a vessel?

Yes, if the vessel you will be working on calls at U.S. ports, you will almost certainly need a C1/D transit and crewmember visa. This specific visa is issued for individuals working as crew on vessels entering U.S. waters. We'll provide you with detailed guidance and support on how to apply for this visa at the U.S. embassy or consulate in your country of residence, ensuring you have all the necessary documents for a smooth process.

Are travel expenses to and from the vessel covered?

Yes, for most international contracts, your flights and necessary travel expenses to the embarkation point of the vessel and back home at the end of your contract are fully covered by the company. This ensures a smooth and cost-free journey to and from your assignment. The exact specifics regarding travel arrangements and coverage will always be clearly outlined in your job offer and employment contract.

Is medical insurance provided while working?

Yes, you will be covered by comprehensive maritime medical insurance for the entire duration of your duty onboard the vessel. This insurance typically covers necessary medical treatment, including emergency care and hospitalization, and repatriation (transportation back home for medical reasons) if necessary. Your health and safety are our priority.

What are the living conditions on the vessel?

Living arrangements vary based on the vessel's type and your specific position. Crew members in management-level positions typically enjoy private cabins, while other crew members generally share a cabin with one or more roommates. Although cabins are designed to be compact, they're fully equipped with a comfortable bed, a shared TV for entertainment, dedicated personal storage space, and a full private bathroom. For your comfort, clean sheets and fresh towels are provided regularly.

Are there places on the vessel for relaxation and socializing?

Absolutely! We understand the importance of downtime. There are designated crew areas specifically for relaxation and socializing. You'll typically find a comfortable common room where crew members can gather to play games, share experiences, or watch movies. On many ships, there's also an Internet Café or Wi-Fi access available, allowing you to easily stay connected with family and friends back home during your off-duty hours. These spaces are designed to help you relax and build camaraderie with your fellow crew.

Contract, Work, and Career Progression

Is this a full-time job?

Yes, employment on a vessel is absolutely a full-time position, requiring your dedicated commitment. However, due to the unique and often intense nature of working and living onboard, our contracts are structured on an assignment basis. This means you'll work diligently for a set period at sea or on the river, typically followed by a well-deserved break ashore before your next assignment.

How long does an assignment/contract usually last?

Assignment durations are flexible and vary significantly depending on the specific position you hold, the type of vessel you're on (e.g., sea-going, river cruise, cargo), and the policies of the specific shipping company. Typically, contracts range from 4 to 10 months onboard, which is then followed by a mandatory and well-deserved period of leave ashore. Contracts for river vessels, in particular, may be shorter, often directly tied to the navigation season.

What opportunities are there for career progression?

We are deeply committed to supporting the professional development of our crew members. For dedicated, high-performing individuals, there are always clear pathways for promotion to higher ranks or more responsible roles within our fleet. We actively encourage and, in many cases, financially support this progression through company-sponsored training programs, specialized courses, and certification opportunities, helping you build a long-term and successful maritime career with us.

What happens at the end of my assignment?

Each assignment thoughtfully concludes with a performance review. Based on this evaluation, you'll typically be invited to return for another contract, recognizing your valuable contribution. In many cases, we can even provide you with details for your next assignment before you leave the ship, ensuring a smooth and planned transition back into your maritime career with us. Our goal is to foster long-term relationships with our dedicated crew members.

Do I need to pay for recruitment services?

No, absolutely not. Reputable manning agencies, like ours, do not charge any recruitment fees to seafarers. Our services are entirely compensated by the shipping companies we partner with. Therefore, you should be extremely cautious of any agency that demands direct payment from you for employment services, as this is against industry best practices.
